What is Whois?
Whois gives you information about the ownership of a domain name, including, who the owner is, the contact information of the owner, when was the domain name registered, when it will expire, etc. Most domain registrars provide a service called "private registration", by which the owner can choose to conceal his/her identity so that his/her privacy can be protected. Usually, for these domain names with private registration, the information of the domain registrar will be shown, instead of the real owner's.
Why a domain is shown as available but as taken with my registrar?
We update our local copy of domain registry on a daily basis, so our record could be one day behind the official domain registry. That's why on rare occasions you will see domains we marked as available while the official registry marks as not, or vice versa. Fortunately, all domain registrars will valid the availability of the domain name you try to register with them before they actually do it.
